Modeling and simulation of Crosstalk in automotive CAN and LIN networks

Abstract — The technological advancement related to the automotive area is generating a substantial increase in the number of electronic modules inside a car and consequently a needed improvement at the vehicular communication bus networks. Therefore, it requires a new electronics architecture concept to connect the systems, such as multiplexing techniques like Controller Area Network (CAN) and Local Interconnect Network (LIN), which became unavoidable. However, these networks are susceptible to an unintentional electromagnetic coupling, called Crosstalk.
The goal of this paper is to show the Crosstalk reducing effect that a twisted pair has over parallel cables. This is done using a lumped model to represent the electromagnetic coupling in both cases, and simulating them using the softwares MATLAB and PSpice. At the end, a comparison is drawn to analyze the results.
